And Tango Makes Three
by Justin Richardson & Peter Parnell
The most challenged book in 2006 and 2007 because of objections to “Anti-Ethnic, Sexism, Homosexuality, Anti-Family, Religious Viewpoint, Unsuited to Age Group”
And Tango Makes Three is the true story of two male penguins at the Central Park Zoo who worked together to hatch an extra egg and raise a penguin chick. The authors did not make the story or situation up, and they have documented evidence of the penguin family. The book is intentionally neutral and does not make judgements one way or the other on the penguins’ chosen lifestyle. The text is matter of fact, and the drawings are quainter than real photographs would have been.
However, it is obvious why this book has been challenged. Despite being careful not to attribute any kind of sexuality to the penguins, the fact that they are both male and live in a family unit has many proponents of traditional family values outraged.
I am so amused by people who think that a book about penguins has a homosexual agenda. Tango is such an adorable book!
We own this one and love it! The text is a little on the long side for a picture book (my 7-month-old daughter can’t always sit thru it), but it’s a very sweet story.
